The Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) is an interdisciplinary research institute for applied mathematics and data-intensive high-performance computing (HPC). Research concentrates on modelling, simulation and optimization in collaboration with scientific cooperation partners from academia and industry. The focus here is on the provision of research infrastructures for virtualization, HPC, storage, web services, data networks and much more.

For the continuation and expansion of the scientific services of the Center for National High Performance Computing (NHR) at the Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB), we are looking for a permanent position in the Supercomputing department at the earliest possible date, initially limited until 31.12.2025 with the option of permanent termination.

ZIB can look back on more than 40 years of experience as an HPC center and, since January 2021, has been one of the nine centers of the nationwide HPC alliance "NHR" (National High Performance Computing, see which is funded by the federal and state governments. We operate computing and storage resources at the highest performance level. Currently, our HPC system "Lise" with a peak performance of 8 PFlop/s offers a platform for the realization of demanding computing tasks and data analysis workflows to solve complex scientific problems. The "Lise" system comprises 120,000 computing cores, 500 TB of distributed memory as well as 10 PB of persistent online storage and two GPU partitions.

The NHR Center at ZIB brings together technical expertise for the efficient operation of HPC resources and system-related advice for users. The future diverse and demanding tasks for the reliable operation of HPC systems require conceptual work in the areas of energy efficiency, heterogeneous computer architectures with GPUs and storage systems as well as their implementation in production operations with the employees of the HPC Systems group. We also expect an interest in innovative IT technologies, their use in a scientific environment and the administration of future complex HPC computer architectures with accelerators (GPU, FPGA), high-speed networks and modern storage systems.

Your tasks:

As a team player in the NHR Center at ZIB, your work will contribute to the further development of efficient operation of the HPC systems. Your tasks will include:

  • Administration of complex HPC architectures with specialization(s) in sub-areas such as parallel file systems, management of heterogeneous resources with Slurm, system deployment and automated system monitoring,
  • Planning, implementation and controlling of conceptual work for energy-efficient and secure operation with heterogeneous computer architectures (GPU, FPGA, AI) and high-performance storage systems (software-defined storage, object stores) as well as their transfer to production
  • Evaluation of innovative new technologies in the HPC environment
  • Planning, implementation and design of NHR future projects in the above areas and controlling of project results Are you looking for a new challenge? Then you've come to the right place. Become part of our international team
  • Development of complex software for system monitoring and tuning as well as user interfaces for the implementation of optimized operations
  • Collaboration in the evaluation of pre-release and early-shipment systems,
  • Willingness to publish project results and contribute to NHR training activities.

Your profile:

  • Successfully completed university degree in computer science or an equivalent scientific/technical subject or many years of sound professional experience in the field,
  • good knowledge of modern heterogeneous computer architectures and storage systems in the HPC environment
  • Experience in the administration of Linux systems,
  • very good knowledge of the Linux shell, higher programming language desirable,
  • Knowledge of carrying out risk and security analyses,
  • Good English language skills,
  • Independent and goal-oriented work.
